Women are Dying Younger Than Men From HIV in US

Although the gap is closing, women with HIV die from the disease at a younger age than men, data released Nov. 6 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. Between 1987 and 2013, the average age of death from HIV disease increased to 50.8 years for men, up from 37.9. Among women, the average age of death increased to 49.7 from 35.2. The disparity likely would be even more pronounced if transgender women had been counted as women among this data. Surveillance data for transgender women only are now are beginning to be collected uniformly by the CDC. Previously, transgender women, who are 49 times more likely to have HIV than the general population , generally were counted in the “men who have sex with
