Study: Effects of HIV News Stories on Risk Behavior

Biomedical advances in HIV prevention, such as PrEP, are part of a global effort to end the AIDS epidemic. Talk of “cures” and “breakthroughs” makes for exciting news stories, but new research suggests that overly optimistic news reporting on experimental studies in HIV prevention may affect individuals’ risk behaviors in potentially damaging ways. In a recent study , HIV prevention researchers analyzed the effects of “hypothetical” news stories on the HIV risk perception and predicted risk behavior of 242 sexually active men who have sex with men (MSM). These news stories reported fabricated biomedical breakthroughs in HIV. For example, one such article claimed “New HIV Vaccine Effective in Humans”
