"When I was training to be an HIV test counselor, my favorite saying I learned during training was: “Don’t yuck other people’s yums.” It’s a mantra I like to reference often because it speaks to the notion that what works for you might not necessarily work for me, and I shouldn’t judge you for acting differently from me."

"As someone who lives each day dedicated to connecting and empowering the LGBT community, I hope to be even more active in helping my brothers and sisters find resources, online and in their communities, to get tested, get treated, and get the support they need to know they should have no fear."

"I lost my father to an AIDS-related illness in 2011. Even though he was a heterosexual drug user, in many ways my work in HIV as a voice for young gay men of color links me with him. I often think about the ways in which HIV has altered the course of my family’s history and how it continues to shape who I am."

"My uncle passed away from AIDS-related complications a year before I was born. He was a healthcare worker and took care of AIDS patients during the 80s. I wanted to continue to work in his legacy. That’s why I became a HIV testing counselor."

"I hope "deepsouth" provides a fresh, first-hand look at the experience of HIV in the American South. I hope that we are able to reframe the issue as a social illness and disease of poverty that continues to affect marginalized people."

"I came out as gay in 1989 in West Hollywood, then soon moved to the Bay Area.  That was the time when knowing people with AIDS, dating people with AIDS and loving people with AIDS meant losing people with AIDS.  I lost a lot."
