The Dangers of Being an HIV “Celebrity”

For the past three years, I’ve attended several conferences surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic and met a lot of great people along the way. Lined throughout the conferences as advertisements on the elevators are some of the greatest HIV activists and advocates across the country. Posters throughout the lobbies lined with friends and advocates who are the brand ambassadors for some of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world; all of them banking on fame and money while so many others aren’t sure where their next check will come from, if they can pay rent and eat when they get back, or if they can keep up the façade that HIV commercialization has built them up to be.
