HIV Equal is Heading to Palm Springs to Test, Photo, and Fight the Stigma

HIV Equal is returning once again to California to help local communities break down the barriers of stigma against testing for HIV. The popular international testing and anti-stigma campaign will be in Palm Springs to host an “HIV Equal: High Tea” campaign event in support of the Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign, as well as to kick off the event weekend for Desert AIDS Project’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. The “HIV Equal: High Tea” campaign event will take place on Friday, February 6, 2015, at Destination PSP from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Celebrity guests will include Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis, Bravo TV’s Scott Nevins from “The People’s Couch,” and the most famous drag performer in Palm Springs, Bella da Ball!

The Palm Springs “HIV Equal: High Tea” campaign event will be held the day before the nationally recognized Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala, which is Desert AIDS Project’s highest-grossing annual event.

The region-wide public health campaign Get Tested Coachella Valley will also share a presence at the event, raising community awareness and conducting free and confidential HIV testing, encouraging everyone to come out and get tested.

HIV Equal welcomes the local community to be photographed at the event to show support for the belief that regardless of your HIV status, we are all equally valuable as human beings.

“It’s really such a great honor to be invited to Palm Springs and to work alongside an organization such as Desert AIDS Project and an initiative like Get Tested Coachella Valley to help everyone in the area know their HIV status,” explained Dr. Gary Blick, Chief Medical Officer of World Health Clinicians and co-creator of HIV Equal. “We’re excited to be coming back to California time and again to broaden our reach and to get people the care they need to protect themselves and their communities from the spread of HIV. We’re exceptionally grateful to Jeffrey Bernstein and Dr. Oscar Chamudes over at Destination PSP for lending us space in their store to host our worthwhile event.”

HIV Equal has come to be recognized for its impact on HIV testing in communities across the world as well as for its work to breakdown of stigma against people living with the virus. In one year, its U.S. events have seen 1,000 participants who have come out in support of getting tested, knowing your status and ending stigma against HIV, and it has helped to link newly diagnosed individuals into proper care.

“This upcoming weekend in February is going to be a series of firsts for HIV Equal,” said Thomas Evans, Photographer/Co-creator of HIV Equal. “More specifically in Palm Springs, we’ll be anticipating all new experiences as we host our first-ever event in a retail location!”

The “HIV Equal: High Tea” campaign event will take place on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Destination PSP (170 North Palm Canyon, Palm Springs, CA 92262) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
