HIV Equal partners with MFAP to offer free, confidential rapid HIV testing at Norwalk, CT offices

HIV Equal (www.HIVequal.org) has partnered with Fairfield County’s AIDS Service Organization, MFAP (www.mfap.com), to offer free, confidential rapid HIV testing. MFAP will offer testing at its headquarters (618 West Avenue, 2nd Floor, Norwalk, CT) Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. HIV Equal will offer testing Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. and Fridays from 3-6 p.m. at its headquarters, located at 606 West Avenue, Suite 2B, Norwalk, CT 06850.

Testing is the most important component of the HIV Equal campaign. Ensuring a safe, judgment-free zone for individuals who are unaware of their HIV status, those who may already be HIV-positive, or for those people testing for the first time in their lives, HIV Equal has been successful in helping communities test for HIV while also breaking down social barriers. MFAP has worked tirelessly for decades in Fairfield County to offer health, housing and hope services to the community of under-served individuals, as well as people living with HIV. In 2015, MFAP has also made a huge push for HCV (Hepatitis C) testing.

Since 2013, HIV Equal has worked with ASOs and other partners across the country to test more than 1,555 individuals for HIV. And while this may be a small fraction of the numbers of people in the U.S. who are getting tested for the virus, the initiative is making a huge impact in the lives of people living with HIV. By also working within CDC guidelines, HIV Equal reaches the highest at-risk communities on a state-by-state basis, staying focused on gay men and transgender women even though the campaign is open to everyone.

According to recent CDC reports, 80% of all new HIV infections between the years 2010-2014 were in males, and 92% of these infections were in gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) aged 13-24. Furthermore, other reports state that nearly one third of transgender women are HIV-positive and that 56% of African-American transgender women are reported to be living with the virus.

HIV Equal is expanding its reach for 2016 by partnering with MFAP and by opening up its headquarters for HIV testing, by hosting events in the highest at-risk neighborhoods in Connecticut and by partnering with ASOs across the country to eliminate the fear and stigma of HIV testing.
